THE DESTINATION

We can’t think of a better setting for a photography internship than South Africa’s ‘Mother City,’ Cape Town. With its glorious natural setting and its vibrant mix of cultures, Cape Town is a fascinating city, and a hugely photogenic one. As a photographer, you’ll be inspired by the dramatic mountain ranges and coast lines, the colourful street scenes, and the many development projects happening in and around the city. It’s a place of contrasts, complications, and colours, and as a keen photographer, you’ll never be bored.

NONPROFIT PHOTOGRAPHY

Cape Town is home to a great number of nonprofit organisations that fight issues like poverty, lack of educational and health facilities, and domestic abuse. Many of these organisations don’t have strong images to raise awareness for their cause, which is where Penda Trust steps in. We provide free photography for grassroots charities, so that they can use them for their communications and fundraising campaigns. Images are a powerful tool in telling the right stories, and if they reach potential donors, this can have a great impact. We work with charities focused on education, sports coaching, eco-education, female empowerment, animal welfare, urban greening, food security, coaching, and much more.

YOUR INTERNSHIP & IMPACT

As a photography intern in Cape Town, you’ll get involved in a variety of projects. You might get involved in teaching photography to charity teams or to teenage kids from underprivileged communities, and you’ll have a chance to help coordinate and fundraise for our different programs. But you’ll spend a majority of your time photographing nonprofit work happening on the ground. Depending on your personal interests, experience, and photography skills, we’ll team you up with nonprofit organisations, which you can document through photography. You’ll spend at least a week with an organisation, so that you can take your time to learn about their mission and methods, and to get the right images. It’s a great opportunity to witness important nonprofit work at a grassroots level, to contribute through your photography, and to build up a diverse portfolio. And you’ll get to sharpen your photography skills.

GUIDANCE

Throughout this photography internship, you’ll be guided by the Penda Trust team in the office, and by professional photographer Anna Lusty. You’ll start your internship with a full-day workshop with Anna, who will help you improve your technical photography and post production skills, and introduce you to nonprofit photography. She’ll give you a solid understanding of the nonprofit sector in Cape Town, the way photography can contribute, and how to approach it in the most effective and culturally sensitive way. Every two weeks, you’ll enjoy another half-day session with Anna, which will allow you to learn further, reflect on your experiences, and asses your work.

DATES & LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP

You can join us for 3 to 12 weeks. Ideally you’ll arrive on a Monday, so that you can start your program on the Tuesday. There’s a level of flexibility, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch to discuss your preferred dates. We can take up to three interns at a time on this program.
