Based in Mossel Bay, South Africa, this immersive two or four-week programme is more than a photography course. It offers practical experience for aspiring and developing photographers who want to work professionally. Through a blend of expert-led training, hands-on fieldwork, and live client assignments, you will gain the technical, creative, and business skills needed to succeed in the wildlife media industry.

You will learn to shoot with purpose, edit with accuracy, and deliver to a brief. You will also explore ethical storytelling, conservation awareness, and the realities of working in a competitive field. From sunrise shoots along the coast to Big Five safaris in a private game reserve, each experience is designed to help you grow your craft and your confidence.

Whether you are building your first portfolio or refining your professional edge, this internship offers a rare opportunity to learn, create, and connect in one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Throughout the program, your mentor will support your development every step of the way.

INTERNSHIP DETAILS

Your Photographic Experience

This internship is designed to reflect the real-world demands of a professional wildlife photographer. You will move beyond theory into practical, portfolio-driven fieldwork, guided by experienced mentors who understand the industry from the inside. From the beginning, you will take part in technical training that covers composition, lighting, camera settings, and post-processing in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. You will also explore ethical storytelling, wildlife behaviour, and how to work respectfully and effectively in natural environments. Your days will include guided shoots such as sunrise and sunset landscapes, night sky photography, and wildlife encounters in both coastal habitats and a Big Five safari setting. You will also work on real client briefs, gaining experience in delivering professional images under direction. This is a core skill for anyone aiming to build a career in photography. Whether you are documenting elephants in soft morning light or creating conservation-focused stories for a nonprofit, each assignment is structured to help you build a strong, market-ready portfolio and the confidence to work as a creative professional.
Comfortable Shared Living & Big Five Camps

YOUR ACCOMMODATION

During your internship you will stay in comfortable, dorm-style accommodation at the studio base in Mossel Bay, located minutes from the coast and local amenities. The shared setup encourages collaboration and friendship, with access to a communal kitchen and living space. While on safari, you will spend between seven and ten days at a private Big Five camp in Bellevue Forest Reserve. Accommodation here is also dorm-style with shared facilities that offer a clean, secure, and immersive bush experience. It is a chance to live close to the wildlife you will be photographing, with early morning shoots and night sky sessions right on your doorstep.

Frikkie Kapp is a seasoned photographer with over 25 years of experience across various disciplines, including wedding, portraiture, and sports photography. Since 2021, following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Frikkie has turned his focus to wildlife photography. His passion for capturing the beauty of the natural world is matched by his dedication to educating and training aspiring photographers and filmmakers. Frikkie uses the medium of photography to tell stories through his lens. He is a patient, fastidious teacher and many students have benefitted from his depth of knowledge and his simple, easy way of explaining complex concepts. He does comprehensive training sessions that emphasize not only the technical aspects of photography in general but particularly wildlife photography and the importance of conservation and caring for the natural world. His approach combines practical skills with a deep respect for the environment, inspiring his students to become both skilled photographers and responsible stewards of nature.

WHAT TO EXPECT

4 weeks:The Full Experience

Over the four-week wildlife photography internship, you will take part in a varied combination of fieldwork, creative projects, and portfolio development. A highlight of the programme is a seven to ten day stay at a private Big Five safari camp in Bellevue Forest Reserve, where you will photograph wildlife that includes lions, elephants, rhinos, hippos, giraffes, and zebras in their natural habitat. You will also visit well-known wildlife sanctuaries in Plettenberg Bay including Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, and Jukani Wildlife Park. Additional experiences include guided game reserve outings and a memorable elephant walk. Beyond wildlife photography, the programme features community storytelling assignments, a coastal hike along the scenic St Blaize Trail, and visits to the Cango Caves, Cango Wildlife Ranch, and the meerkat colonies around Oudtshoorn. Each week includes sunrise and sunset landscape sessions along with night sky photography under clear South African skies. By the end, participants will have created a rich and varied portfolio while gaining a strong understanding of ethical and professional wildlife photography.

2 weeks:Safaris, Sunrises & Breath Taking Locations

The two-week programme offers a focused, high-impact introduction to wildlife photography. You begin in Mossel Bay with core photography training, practical coastal shoots and editing workshops that give you a strong foundation in the technical basics. At the end of the first week, you will visit Monkeyland and Birds of Eden before travelling to Bellevue Forest Reserve. Here you will spend several immersive days on safari, photographing wildlife that includes elephants, rhinos, lions, hippos, giraffes and zebras. Guided sunrise and sunset sessions help you develop your understanding of natural light, animal behaviour and ethical field practice. Throughout your time in the field, you will receive close mentorship to help you create a set of strong, portfolio-ready images. This streamlined format is designed for photographers who want focused training and meaningful safari experience within a shorter timeframe.
