PHOTOGRAPH A WIDE RANGE OF WILDLIFE, INCLUDING LIONS, ELEPHANTS, AND RHINO, IN THE GREATER KRUGER

Have you always wanted to be a wildlife photographer? Join this South African Photo Safari in the stunning Greater Kruger area. You will enjoy incredible game viewing while sharpening your skills – no matter what level you are at as a photographer. During our game drives in exclusive private game reserves, you can expect to spot the Big Five – lions, elephants, leopards, rhino, and buffalo – as well as giraffe, zebra, and a range of antelope. We’ll mix up our Big Five game viewing with a visit to a reptile centre with great close-up photographic opportunities, and an overnight camping safari in a game reserve, where lions might roam around your tent at night. Throughout this photo safari, award-winning photographer Emil von Maltitz will offer tutoring, both during lectures at our lodge, and while we’re out photographing. Since we’ll have a minimum of six people, there will be plenty of time for Emil to work with everyone individually, making this an ideal trip for photographers of all levels, including beginners. You can view our other Africa photo tours here.

THE DESTINATION

The private game reserves around Kruger National Park offer some of the best game viewing in Africa. It’s where you can spot the Big Five with surprising ease, and where the wildlife is exceptionally relaxed around game drive vehicles. This allows for phenomenal wildlife photography; not only can you expect to encounter wildlife often, you’ll also be very close, and can take your time observing and photographing the animals. You can expect to have elephants cross the road in front of you, and to find large herds of buffalo drinking at water holes. If you’re lucky, you might even witness lions hunting, and find leopards up in trees with their fresh kill.

ACCOMMODATION

We’ll be staying at a comfortable lodge near Hoedspruit, where we’ll have a permanent tented camp to ourselves. And don’t expect simple dome tents – we’ll stay in large tents with ensuite bathrooms and comfortable beds. The lodge is conveniently located for a number of brilliant private reserves, and you might find small wildlife (like monkeys and small antelope) roaming around your accommodation. All meals will be served at the lodge, and you can also enjoy a large pool, several communal areas, and a bar.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY

Our full itinerary is built around wildlife photography. During most days, we’ll enjoy two three-hour game drives, at times when the light is as its best and the animals at their most active. In between game drives, Lucia will offer lectures, and there will be time for everyone to review their work. We’ll spend one morning at Kinyonga Reptile Centre, an excellent haven for snakes, chameleons, and other reptiles, where we’ll enjoy some unique opportunities to photograph these animals from up close. For one of the nights, we’ll stay overnight in one of the private game reserves on a camping expedition, which will give us the chance to do night drives, walking safaris, and to practise astrophotography.

You’ll have the privilege of being guided by Emil von Maltitz, an award-winning South African photographer with a wide body of work, including wildlife photography, landscape photography, and corporate work. He’s been a photographic guide for years, too, and will offer excellent tutoring that’s tailored to everyone’s level. Emil will help you improve your technical camera use, your composition, as well as your post-production skills. And don’t worry if you’re a beginner – you’re guaranteed to sharpen your skills and come home with impressive photographs.

Penda Icons Itinerary - South African Photo Safari with Emil von Maltitz
YOUR 9-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Hoedspruit

Arrival at Hoedspruit airport, where we’ll pick you up and take you on the short (30-minute) drive to our lodge. We’ll have time to settle in and meet each other, before venturing on our first game drive at the end of the afternoon.

Day 2 & 3: Big Five game drives

We’ll focus fully on discovering the wildlife that’s surrounding us during two 3-hour game drives a day. To make the most of the warm African light at dawn, we’ll set off early on our first game drive. It will be worth it – the bush is stunning and the wildlife active this early hour, and photographic opportunities will be abundant. When we return to our lodge, we’ll enjoy a breakfast, after which there’s time to relax or review images with Emil. After lunch, later in the afternoon, we’ll set off on a second game drive, this time when the sun is setting. It’s an ideal time to find elephants roaming, lions hunting, and zebra feeding.

Day 4: Kinyonga Reptile Center

In the morning, we’ll treat you to a visit to Kinyonga Reptile Centre, a conservation focused research centre that offers detailed information on a number of reptile species – and phenomenal photographic opportunities. You can expect to photograph snakes, lizards, and some small creepy crawlies from up-close. In the afternoon, we’ll head out on another game drive.

Day 5 & 6: Safari Camping Trip

We’ll set off on an overnight safari expedition in one of the private game reserves around us; a chance to fully experience the African bush and all its photographic magic. It will give us a chance to not only enjoy normal game drives, but also night drives (which allows us to see a number of animals we won’t encounter in the daytime), possibly a walking safari, and an astrophotography session at night. Without any light pollution, the African night sky is truly breathtaking. At night, don’t be surprised to hear animals roaming around our tents. In the morning, we’ll enjoy a further game drive, after which we’ll head back to our lodge.

Days 7 & 8: Big Five Game Drives

Two more days of game drives, photography lectures by Lucia, and time to review our images.

Day 9: Departure

After a last game drive in the morning, we’ll wrap up our workshop by mid-morning, and drive you back to the airport.
