Brown Bears, Wetland Birds & Baltic Coastlines

Discover Estonia, a somewhat hidden European gem for photographers. This seven-day photography adventure takes you deep into the country’s forests, wetlands, and quiet coastlines at the height of spring activity. Guided by award-winning naturalist and photographer Marko Poolamets, you’ll combine hide sessions, landscape shoots, and exploratory walks in some of Estonia’s most wildlife-rich environments; places where brown bears emerge from the shadows, cranes dance on misty bog meadows, and the first warm light of day filters through untouched forest.

May is an exceptional time to photograph wildlife here. Birds are displaying and nesting, mammals are active after winter, and the subdued spring light stays low and soft for hours. From intimate encounters with elk, beavers, and raccoon dogs to coastal seals and the drama of white-tailed eagles overhead, this tour offers a rare level of variety in a single week. Along the way, raised bogs and waterfalls provide striking opportunities for landscape photography, and you’ll end with a relaxed cultural finale – camera in hand – in the medieval old town of Tallinn.

With small group sizes and thoughtful guidance throughout, this tour is designed for photographers who appreciate a variety of photographic subjects, and the chance to explore Estonia’s wilderness at its most vibrant.

Your Photographic Experience

Hide Photography: Bears, Raccoon Dogs, and More This tour is designed to show you the very best of Estonia, and offers an exceptional variety of photographic opportunities; wildlife, landscapes, and authentic nature experiences. Hide-based wildlife photography is a key feature of the trip, and one of the highlights is an overnight session in the Alutaguse bear hide, located in one of Europe’s best regions to observe brown bears. From a comfortable and purpose-built hide, you’ll have the chance to photograph bears as they emerge into open forest clearings, often alongside raccoon dogs and red squirrels. The silence and anticipation in the hide, combined with the possibility of bears appearing at close range, makes this an intense and unforgettable photographic session. A Wide Variety of Ecosystems Throughout the week, you’ll also visit a range of carefully selected locations that showcase Estonia’s ecosystems at their most dynamic in spring: Matsalu National Park, one of Europe’s top birding wetlands, for cranes, black grouse, godwits, woodpeckers, and other lekking and displaying birds. Kasari river boat trip for beavers, elk along the riverbanks, and close encounters with wetland birds. Raised bog landscapes and misty early mornings around Kõveri, with additional access to small hides for waders, ruffs, and cranes, designed to get you close without disturbance. Krootuse hide complex, where feeders and set perches create ideal conditions for smaller forest species and woodpeckers. Lahemaa National Park, Estonia’s oldest national park, with cascading waterfalls, old-growth forest, and minimalist bog panoramas. Coastal safari and boat photography on the north coast to document seals and seabirds in open water. Diverse Photography Focus & Tutoring The pacing of the trip is designed with photographers in mind: early starts to make the most of soft morning light, unhurried time in hides, and the flexibility to return to promising locations. You'll work across multiple photographic styles; wildlife behaviour, intimate portraits, wide landscapes, and fast-moving birds. So this tour is ideal for photographers who enjoy variety and who want to build a diverse portfolio in a single trip. Marko will be on hand throughout to help with everything from camera settings and hide etiquette to composition and storytelling.

Guest feedback

“I was amazed by how much wildlife and variety of landscapes Estonia packs into such a small area. Every day brought something new – wetlands, birds, wildlife, deep forests, and quiet coastal spots where you could photograph animals you’d struggle to find elsewhere in Europe. The whole trip felt easy and safe, and the local people were genuinely friendly and welcoming.”

Estonia Photo Tour FAQs

What wildlife can I expect to photograph on this tour?

Estonia offers outstanding wildlife diversity in spring. You may photograph brown bears, elk, beavers, raccoon dogs, red squirrels, seals, and a wide range of wetland and forest birds including cranes, black grouse, capercaillie, ruffs, woodpeckers, and white-tailed eagles. While wildlife is always unpredictable, May provides excellent activity and light.

How likely is it that we will see brown bears?

Very likely. The overnight hide in Alutaguse is located in one of Europe’s most reliable regions for bear photography. Although sightings can’t be guaranteed, the hide is positioned in a high-activity area and has an excellent track record.

Do I need to be an experienced photographer to join?

Not at all. This tour suits all skill levels, from beginners who want to learn, to experienced photographers building a portfolio. Your guide, Marko, provides support in the field with composition, settings, and preparing for specific wildlife behaviour.

What photography gear should I bring?

A telephoto lens (300–500mm or equivalent) is ideal for wildlife. A wider lens (16–35mm / 24–70mm) works well for landscapes, and a tripod is recommended for low-light conditions and hide photography. A detailed gear list will be provided upon booking.

How much time will we spend in photography hides?

Several sessions during the week, including a full day in a forest hide and one overnight bear photography session. Smaller, specialised hides are also used for cranes, waders, and ruffs. This allows for close, undisturbed wildlife experiences.

What are the walking and activity levels like?

Most photography locations are easily accessible. Some mornings include short walks to bird leks or along boardwalks across raised bogs, but the terrain is generally gentle. You don’t need to be extremely fit, just comfortable spending several hours outdoors.

What is the weather like in Estonia in May?

Expect mild temperatures (10–18°C / 50–64°F) with long daylight hours and soft, low light. Layers are key, as mornings can be cool, especially in bogs or hides, but daytime is comfortable.

Will we have time to explore Tallinn?

Yes. On the final day, you’ll enjoy a guided photography walk in Tallinn’s medieval Old Town—perfect for street, architecture, and detail photography before your onward travel.
