Rainforests, riverbanks, and rare wildlife

This 12-day photography tour through Borneo is built for those who want more than just glimpses of wildlife — it’s about time in the field, patience, and access to some of the island’s richest ecosystems. With a strong focus on wild encounters and photographic potential, the itinerary moves through lowland rainforests, quiet rivers, canopy walkways, and conservation hubs, offering diverse settings and perspectives.

Beginning in Sandakan, you’ll photograph semi-wild orangutans at Sepilok and the elusive sun bear at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Walk among the treetops at the Rainforest Discovery Centre, ideal for bird photography and soft afternoon light. Then head to the Kinabatangan River, where daily cruises reveal proboscis monkeys, hornbills, crocodiles, and—if you’re lucky—wild orangutans. Evening bat flights at Gomantong Caves and guided night walks add rare low-light opportunities.

From there, move deeper into remote reserves. In Tabin, you’ll track wildlife near mineral-rich mud volcanoes and photograph forest species at dusk and dawn. Danum Valley offers some of the most immersive rainforest experiences in Southeast Asia: canopy-level views, jungle treks, ancient burial sites, and riverside trails all deliver varied, high-quality shooting environments.

Throughout the trip, expert guidance and small group size mean you’ll have space, time, and support to focus on the work of observation and image-making — not just sightseeing. This tour is for those looking to slow down, stay curious, and come away with a meaningful body of work.

What to expect on this Borneo photo tour

Your photography experience

This photography tour through Borneo offers a rare chance to work across a range of wild environments — from coastal rainforest to cave systems, lowland rivers, and remote primary jungle. It’s not just a wildlife trip with a camera; it’s an opportunity to slow down, observe, and shoot in some of Borneo’s most ecologically rich habitats. In Sepilok, you'll have time to photograph orangutans during feeding — not just portraits, but movement, interaction, and behaviour. The nearby Bornean Sun Bear Centre allows close-range shots of these rarely seen animals in naturalistic enclosures. The Rainforest Discovery Centre adds forest birds, aerial perspectives from the canopy walkway, and dramatic late-afternoon light. Along the Kinabatangan River, you’ll shoot from small boats — a stable, low-angle platform ideal for capturing proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and crocodiles. Light conditions shift fast here, offering real-time practice with exposure, composition, and patience. A visit to Gomantong Cave adds low-light challenges and surreal scenes of bats, swiftlets, and birds of prey. In Tabin, there’s more freedom to explore on foot — trekking to mud volcanoes and waterfalls, photographing wildlife licks, and joining dusk drives or night walks. Finally, the Danum Valley Conservation Area is your chance to work in pristine primary rainforest, with trails and canopy platforms that give new angles for shooting orangutans, forest elephants, and rare birds. This isn’t a rushed tour — it’s structured time in varied habitats with space to shoot, refine your technique, and build a meaningful, place-based portfolio.

Day 1Arrival in Sandakan & Rainforest Discovery

Touch down at Sandakan Airport, where you’ll be greeted and transferred to your hotel or chalet for check-in and a relaxing lunch. In the late afternoon, we’ll visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), home to one of the tallest canopy walkways in Borneo. This is the perfect introduction to the region’s incredible biodiversity, with excellent chances to photograph birds, macaques, and the lush rainforest canopy in beautiful afternoon light. As dusk approaches, we’ll embark on a night walk in search of Borneo’s fascinating nocturnal wildlife, including flying squirrels, civets, and various night birds.

Day 2Orangutans, Sun Bears & the Rainforest Canopy

In the early morning, we’ll return to the Rainforest Discovery Centre to capture the magical sunrise over the rainforest. Early light is perfect for bird photography and spotting primates as the forest comes alive. After breakfast, we’ll visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre to photograph the world’s smallest bear species in a natural forest setting. These bears, often seen climbing trees or foraging, offer wonderful photographic opportunities. Next, we’ll explore the renowned Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where we can observe semi-wild orangutans at the morning feeding station and learn about their rehabilitation journey. After lunch and some leisure time back at the lodge, we’ll return to Sepilok for the afternoon feeding session, often a quieter and more intimate photographic opportunity. Later, we’ll enjoy another visit to the Rainforest Discovery Centre, where the canopy walkway and forest trails reveal their magic in the soft afternoon light. As evening falls, we’ll embark on another night walk to search for nocturnal wildlife before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Day 3To the Wilds of Kinabatangan & Bat Caves

After breakfast and check-out, it’s time to hit the road to the Kinabatangan River, one of Borneo’s best spots for wildlife. The scenic drive takes about two hours. We'll arrive at our riverside lodge just in time for lunch. Later in the afternoon, we'll venture to the eerie and fascinating Gomantong Caves, home to thousands of swiftlets and bats. Stick around for the jaw-dropping evening bat exodus — often pursued by bat hawks and other raptors! Afterwards, we'll head back to the lodge for dinner, and if you’re feeling adventurous, join an optional night walk to discover the forest’s nocturnal side.

Day 3River Cruises & Wildlife Encounters

Start the day with an early morning cruise along the Kinabatangan — one of the best times to catch sight of proboscis monkeys, hornbills, crocodiles, and maybe even wild orangutans. We'll return for breakfast and some downtime before heading back out after lunch for another peaceful river cruise, soaking up the sights and sounds of this unique ecosystem.

Day 5Last Light on the River

Squeeze in one more magical morning river cruise, soaking up the cool air and looking for any last wildlife moments. Back at the lodge, we'll enjoy a leisurely morning and lunch. Spend your afternoon birdwatching, relaxing, or exploring nearby trails before heading out on your final Kinabatangan cruise.

Day 6Off to Tabin Wildlife Reserve

Early breakfast before heading overland to Lahad Datu, then onward to Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Once we arrive, there’s a short briefing and video to get you oriented before checking into your lodge and enjoying lunch. In the afternoon, we'll take a guided walk along the Elephant Trail to the Lipad Mud Volcano, a mineral-rich clearing that attracts wildlife. After dinner, we'll set off on a night safari in search of nocturnal creatures.

Day 7Jungle Trails & Tabin Tranquility

Start your day with a peaceful early bird walk — great for catching photos of Borneo’s vibrant birdlife. After breakfast, we'll climb up the Birdwatching Tower and head off through the forest to the Lipad Waterfall, a perfect place to unwind and shoot some beautiful rainforest scenes. We'll return for lunch and try the Tabin Rainforest Foot Soak, a traditional herbal treatment that’s perfect after your treks. We'll then wrap up the day with a dusk drive and a guided night walk to search for more elusive wildlife.

Day 8Into Danum Valley’s Heart

After breakfast, we'll travel by road to the iconic Danum Valley Conservation Area (around 2.5 hours). Once we arrive, there’s a quick safety briefing before check-in and lunch. In the afternoon, we'll start exploring the area’s nature trails and the famous Canopy Walkway, ideal for photography from above the jungle. In the evening, we'll head out for a night drive or walk to meet Danum’s after-dark wildlife.

Day 9Ancient Views & Rainforest Discoveries

After an early breakfast, we'll hike to View Point and Coffin Cliff, with sweeping views and a look at ancient burial sites — a fascinating cultural and scenic combo. Cool off with a dip (or some great shots) at the Natural Jacuzzi Pool on your way back. After lunch, enjoy an afternoon of jungle trails and more time on the canopy walkway, tracking hornbills, primates, and whatever else the rainforest reveals. We'll cap it off with another optional night safari or walk.

Day 10Waterfalls & Wildlife Along the River

This morning, follow the trail to Fairy Falls, a gorgeous, tucked-away spot perfect for peaceful photos and a taste of the untouched rainforest. After lunch, we'll set out on your final afternoon of jungle trekking and river walks, keeping an eye out for birds, monkeys, and other wildlife you might’ve missed. Night owls can join one more after-dark walk or drive for a last glimpse of Danum’s nighttime magic.

Day 11Back to Kota Kinabalu

For the early risers, there’s a last chance to walk the forest trails and soak in the morning light. After breakfast, relax before lunch at the lodge. Then, it’s time to transfer to Lahad Datu Airport for your flight to Kota Kinabalu (MH3019, ETD 4:30 PM).

Day 12Departure

Breakfast and check-out. Transfer to Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) for your onward flight home, filled with rainforest memories and incredible wildlife shots.
