Brown Bears, Wetland Birds & Baltic Coastlines

Discover Estonia, a somewhat hidden European gem for photographers. This seven-day photography adventure takes you deep into the country’s forests, wetlands, and quiet coastlines at the height of spring activity. Guided by award-winning naturalist and photographer Marko Poolamets, you’ll combine hide sessions, landscape shoots, and exploratory walks in some of Estonia’s most wildlife-rich environments; places where brown bears emerge from the shadows, cranes dance on misty bog meadows, and the first warm light of day filters through untouched forest.

May is an exceptional time to photograph wildlife here. Birds are displaying and nesting, mammals are active after winter, and the subdued spring light stays low and soft for hours. From intimate encounters with elk, beavers, and raccoon dogs to coastal seals and the drama of white-tailed eagles overhead, this tour offers a rare level of variety in a single week. Along the way, raised bogs and waterfalls provide striking opportunities for landscape photography, and you’ll end with a relaxed cultural finale – camera in hand – in the medieval old town of Tallinn.

With small group sizes and thoughtful guidance throughout, this tour is designed for photographers who appreciate a variety of photographic subjects, and the chance to explore Estonia’s wilderness at its most vibrant.

Your Photographic Experience

Hide Photography: Bears, Raccoons, and More This tour is designed to show you the very best of Estonia, and offers an exceptional variety of photographic opportunities; wildlife, landscapes, and authentic nature experiences. Hide-based wildlife photography is a key feature of the trip, and one of the highlights is an overnight session in the Alutaguse bear hide, located in one of Europe’s best regions to observe brown bears. From a comfortable and purpose-built hide, you’ll have the chance to photograph bears as they emerge into open forest clearings, often alongside raccoon dogs and red squirrels. The silence and anticipation in the hide, combined with the possibility of bears appearing at close range, makes this an intense and unforgettable photographic session. A Wild Variety of Ecosystems Throughout the week, you’ll also visit a range of carefully selected locations that showcase Estonia’s ecosystems at their most dynamic in spring: Matsalu National Park, one of Europe’s top birding wetlands, for cranes, black grouse, godwits, woodpeckers, and other lekking and displaying birds. Kasari river boat trip for beavers, elk along the riverbanks, and close encounters with wetland birds. Raised bog landscapes and misty early mornings around Kõveri, with additional access to small hides for waders, ruffs, and cranes, designed to get you close without disturbance. Krootuse hide complex, where feeders and set perches create ideal conditions for smaller forest species and woodpeckers. Lahemaa National Park, Estonia’s oldest national park, with cascading waterfalls, old-growth forest, and minimalist bog panoramas. Coastal safari and boat photography on the north coast to document seals and seabirds in open water. Diverse Photography Focus & Tutoring The pacing of the trip is designed with photographers in mind: early starts to make the most of soft morning light, unhurried time in hides, and the flexibility to return to promising locations. You'll work across multiple photographic styles; wildlife behaviour, intimate portraits, wide landscapes, and fast-moving birds. So this tour is ideal for photographers who enjoy variety and who want to build a diverse portfolio in a single trip. Marko will be on hand throughout to help with everything from camera settings and hide etiquette to composition and storytelling.
