Let us take you where the bears roam.

Slovenia is a hidden gem in Europe’s wildlife photography scene, offering a unique chance to photograph its most iconic resident—the brown bear. With a population of over 500 brown bears, Slovenia is one of the last strongholds for this magnificent species in Europe. Designed to give you exclusive access to some of the best bear-watching hides in the region, this photography tour offers an unparalleled opportunity to photograph these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Plus, we’ll be traveling at an ideal time to photograph bear cubs.

On this 5-day, 4-night adventure, you’ll join wildlife photographer Sam Turley, who will guide you through Slovenia’s wildest corners, from the shadowed forests of the Notranjska and Kočevska Regions. The area is known for fascinating karst phenomena, such as Lake Cerknica, the largest intermittent lake in the world, and Križna Jama Cave, a karst cave with a chain of underground lakes. Naturally, one cannot ignore the forests of the Dinaric Karst, which provide the populations of brown bear, lynx, wolf, Ural owl, and three-toed woodpecker with shelter.

Whether you’re an experienced photographer or a nature enthusiast, this bear photography tour will help you develop your craft while immersed in one of Europe’s most pristine wilderness areas.

What to Expect in Slovenia

Your Photographic Experience

This tour offers a rare chance to photograph brown bears from excellent hides, within their natural habitat in Slovenia’s southern and central forests, including Kočevsko, Notranjska Regional Park, and Risnjak National Park. The brown bear is a majestic and powerful creature that plays a vital role in the local ecosystem. During your tour, you’ll have the rare chance to observe these creatures in their natural habitat–often up close–giving you the opportunity to capture their grace and strength. Timed for late July, the tour benefits from long daylight hours and optimal lighting for photographing bears as they forage. With a special focus on the rare and intimate family dynamics of mothers with their cubs, this is the ideal time, as mother bears are especially active, foraging and caring for their young. You’ll have the chance to photograph them as they nurture, teach, and guide their cubs through the wild– an incredible and fleeting moment that few wildlife photographers ever get to witness. While bears are the focus, Slovenia’s wildlife includes wolves, wild boar, deer, lynx, and birds like golden eagles and woodpeckers. You’ll have the chance to explore the country’s unique blend of rugged wilderness and serene natural beauty, with ample opportunity to shoot both wide-angle landscapes and close-up wildlife portraits, making it an ideal location for photographers of all styles. Our aim is to help you develop both your technical and creative skills, with personalized guidance from your photographic mentor.
