Join us on an inspiring NGO photography trip to South Africa.
Contribute to worthwhile development programs through the medium of photography, enjoy some incredible photographic highlights of Cape Town, and improve your photography through personal guidance!
We’re excited to be offering this photography volunteer program in Cape Town, a rewarding experience in an inspiring setting. Our main focus on this trip will be to run photography workshops with groups of women in Khayelitsha, the city’s largest township, which will help them develop their important community projects. You’ll also have a chance to learn about and photograph a number of nonprofit organisations and to donate the images to them, so that the pictures can be used for fundraising purposes.
You’ll be guided by Andrea Rees, a professional photographer and founder of ‘Heart of a Woman’, a project that works to empower women to have a voice, access to Internet, a creative outlet and an opportunity to generate income through the sales of photographic art products or photo-based campaigns. This trip is a great way to learn about important nonprofit work happening in Cape Town, contribute to good causes through photography, and improve your own photography along the way.
And, of course, we’ll also explore some of the many travel highlights Cape Town has to offer! We’ll go onto Table Mountain, venture to Cape Point, photograph St James beach at sunset, and visit the famous penguin colony in Simon’s Town. We’ll head out for several sunrise and sunset missions, and for those interested, we’ll explore some night photography.
You can view other Non-profit workshops here.

THE DESTINATION
Cape Town photography
During this Cape Town photography volunteer experience, expect an equal split between landscape and cultural photography. We’ll make full use of the city’s diversity, and you can expect to photograph colourful street scenes and people, impressive mountains, rugged coastlines, sunsets on the city skylines, as well as some of the wildlife that can be found in and around the city, including baboons and penguins. With our nonprofit photography focus, we’ll also explore how photography can make the most impact to humanitarian causes.
YOUR 11-DAY ITINERARY
Day 1 : Arrival in Cape Town
Arrival in Cape Town, where we’ll pick you up from the airport and transfer you to our accommodation. After settling in and meeting the group, we’ll have sundowners on Signal Hill; we’ll sip a glass of wine while watching and photographing the sunset from this beautiful spot.
Day 2 : Exploring Cape Town
We’ll have an early start to make use of the warm light at dawn, and enjoy a sunrise photography session in one of Cape Town’s iconic neighborhoods. Afterwards, we’ll spend afternoon on top of Table Mountain, where you’ll get far-reaching views of the city and its stunning natural surroundings. There will also be opportunity to explore the V&A Waterfront, a vibrant harbour area with colourful markets, shops, and restaurants.
Day 3 - 5 : Heart of a Woman Program & Khayelitsha
After an introduction to the Heart of a Woman program by Andrea, we’ll spend several days in Khayelitsha, Cape Town’s largest township, to work with a group of women in helping them take better pictures to promote the humanitarian work they are doing in their community.
At the end of one of the days, we’ll treat you to a sunset photography session at St James beach, which has an iconic row of colourful beach huts.
Day 6 : Visit nonprofit organisations
We’ll visit several nonprofit organisations, and you’ll have the opportunity to document their work and donate your images to these organisations. They can then use them for their communication and fundraising purposes. It’s a great way of giving worthwhile causes some visual aids to promote their work and gain support.
Day 7 : Cape Point and Penguin Colony
We’ll enjoy a full-day trip to the Cape of Good Hope, a rocky promontory that forms the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula. On the way there, we’ll drive over Chapman’s Peak (a stunning coastal road carved out of a mountain), we’ll visit the penguin colony in Simon’s Town, and we’ll enjoy some game viewing through Cape Point National Park. We’ll treat everyone to a final dinner.
Day 8 : Transfer to Airport
If you won’t join our safari, we’ll transfer you back to the airport. For those joining us, we’ll head to the airport in the morning and fly to Hoedspruit, where we’ll make our way to a lodge in a private game reserve in the Greater Kruger Area. We’ll have a first game drive in the afternoon.
