THE DESTINATION

This Botswana photo safari is based in the beautiful Tuli Block. Described by Lonely Planet as ‘Botswana’s best kept secret’, Tuli Block is a nature reserve marked by far-stretching and striking landscapes: vast moon-like rocky plains, large riverbeds lined with giant trees, and stark blue skies. The dry winter season offers prime game-viewing and exceptionally clear starry nights, whilst the rainy summer season sees carpets of wildflowers spring from the ground: refreshed by spectacular thunderstorms. It is a land populated by lions, leopards, large herds of elephants, hippos, hyenas, wild dogs, and cheetahs. The Tuli Block is also home to an impressive variety of bird species, including (but certainly not limited to) Meyer’s Parrot, African Scops-Owl, Meve’s Starling, Southern Black Tit, Little Sparrowhawk, and a mating pair of Verreaux Eagles – a paradise for birding enthusiasts!

ACCOMMODATION

For the 7-day itinerary, you’ll stay at Serolo Safari Camp. Sheltered by Mashatu and Apple-leaf trees and only a few hundred meters from the banks of the Limpopo River, Serolo sits right in the heart of the wilderness you journeyed here to photograph. You will spend your nights in a comfortable two-bed safari-style tent, fully serviced with hot running water, en-suite showers, and flush toilets. There are electric fans and lamps in each tent and bedding, towels, and soap are supplied.

If you’re joining us for the longer itinerary in May 2025, you’ll divide your time between Serolo Safari Camp and the neighbouring Mohave Bush Camp; a camp with permanent safari tents and a similar authentic African feel. Mohave is off the grid, but solar power will charge all of our equipment. This camp is exceptionally well-positioned for game viewing, and you’ll enjoy some great photographic opportunities from the comfort of your tent.

Both camps have splash pools, communal areas, and lovely outside dining areas, where you’ll enjoy three cooked meals a day.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY

The Tuli Block is a fantastic location for photographing some of Botswana’s larger species such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and elephants, but we’ll also focus on smaller wildlife during your photo safari, both during game drives and on foot, like jackals, honey badgers, different antelope, and birds of prey. The Tuli Block offers some unique photographic opportunities too; near our lodge, for instance, there’s a hyena den that will allow us to observe and photograph these fascinating animals from unusually nearby, and the elusive bat-eared fox can sometimes be spotted on night-drives. This area truly is brimming with life, offering a huge variety and abundance of photographic subjects to enrich your portfolio. 

The breath-taking vistas of the Tuli Block provide a unique backdrop for your wildlife photography and, for those keen, also offer exciting landscape photography opportunities. The bright, clear, and expansive night skies offer a chance to explore astrophotography too. 

Your guide, Alan, will time your game drives and walking safaris to both harness the best possible lighting conditions for your photographs, and to suit the behaviours of the animals you’re tracking; he’ll do his upmost to make sure that you’re in the right place at the right time for those prime photographic opportunities. 

PHOTOGRAPHIC TUTORING

Alan, an experienced wildlife photographer, will be there to assist you throughout your photo safari and to help you take the best possible wildlife images. His tuition will be tailored to everyone’s level; you’ll be able to get as much or as little guidance as you would like. Tuition will most likely include camera settings, exposure, aperture, creative techniques, as well as post-processing. The tuition will happen both during game drives and other activities, and during sessions at our accommodation; it’s flexible and adaptable to everyone’s needs. If there’s anything in particular you would like to learn – be sure to ask! It is our hope that you’ll return home from your Botswana photo safari with an enriched portfolio and improved photography skills that you can implement in all your future photographic expeditions.
